Robert
DeNiro plays Max Cady, a man who spends 14 years in prison for raping
and beating a young woman. While in prison the white trash poster
boy educates himself by reading law books and learns that his lawyer
Sam Bowden, played by Nick Nolte, withheld information about the
woman Cady raped. Over the years he is in prison Cady becomes tough
and tattooed, his body is now covered in bible scriptures about
judgement and retribution. At the end of his sentence Cady is released
from jail and about to unleash hell on Sam Bowden and his family.
While Cady was in prison Bowden becomes a successful lawyer, marries
a beautiful wife Leigh, played by Jessica Lang and has a 16 year
old daughter played by Juliet Lewis in her first movie role. Cady
begins to pester and annoy the Bowden family at every chance he
gets until Max and Sam finally have a heart to heart and Bowden
realizes that Cady knows what he did to him. After this Cady becomes
the hunter and the Bowden family is the prey. Cady attacks the friends
of the Bowden's and begins to usurp the gullible, and very
delicious, young Dani.
The movie moves into a violent and graphic end as the Bowden's
go on the run from the crazed Cady. The summit comes as the final
showdown begins on an isolated houseboat in the middle of nowhere.
Directed by Martin Scorsese this remake is fantastic. DeNiro is
flawless as Cady. His mannerisms and way of speaking bring out Cady's
demonic presence. "Come out come out where ever you are.."
DeNiro plays Cady's brutal side like an avenging angel and
Nolte is great as the milk toast Sam. This one takes about 20 minutes
to get going but once it grabs you Cape Fear never lets go.
Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, stars of the original Cape Fear,
have cameos in this film as well, but this one is truly more of
a retelling than remake as it is very far from the original.
9/10
P.S. The scene in which Cady gives Sam the trial on the boat is
absolutely hysterical and brutal.
P.P.S Juliet Lewis really knows how to suck… a thumb. It still gives
me penis tingles. |
