Lord J, I think you forgot to stick burning incense sticks into your body post-coma.  I think that was the trick.

LOVE this genre. Love martial arts.

"Best of the Best".  "Bloodmoon".  Get some.

Ha!  So this isn't 80s or 90s, but I just saw a movie in the theater called The Raid: Redemption and it is literally the coolest martial arts movie I've ever seen.  A crime lord owns an apartment building and rents out all of his rooms to people who need a place to hide.  Police do a raid and it's 30 floors of mayhem.  It's out of Indonesia, of all places.  If this comes anywhere near you guys make the trip out, I guarantee you it's worth it.

Crap! Between Cabin in the Woods last weekend and The Avengers this weekend, all my allotted movie theater money will be blown until next paycheck.

Also, unrelated, but slightly related... does anyone remember the ill-fated cartoons based on 80s/90s action flicks? I mean did they really think Rambo: The Force of Freedom was going to work out? Not to mention RoboCop: The Animated Series. What psycho (that doesn't have a Horrorwatch login) watches the uncut version of RoboCop or the less violent but higher body count of RoboCop 2 and thinks, "Hey! This would make a great cartoon!"

I was curious about The Raid.  The previews were pretty sparse.  As a result, I dismissed it as shit until you gave me the premise Trauma.  Now I'm intrigued.  I will be there.  Yes.

Don't remember the cartoons, J.  I'm usually a sucker for nostalgia like that, but I don't remember these at all.

*another pretty comical side note. There was a point in time where all of JCVDs movies had contractual stipulations where he HAD to show his bum on film. No bum shot, no movie. Simple as that.

I, for one, happily paid to see van Damme's buns.  I had a friend I used to go to JCVD movies with, and we rated them on a "full moon, half moon, quarter moon" scale.  Totally worth the price of admission.

I also have to admit that I quite liked the Quest.  (Not saying it's a good movie, just that I liked it.)  I saw it in the theater and in no way wanted my money back.  I mean, really, it's a kids movie, what do you expect?  Theater I saw it in was flooded with kids around 7 or 8, and they LOOOVED it - they gleefully spin-kicked their ways up the aisle into the daylight.  And, for me and my friend, there is that whole bit where he's oiled up in chains in the ship's hold ....

My favorite was Double Team, tho.  That movie was like a surrealist's wet dream, and the Coke machines at the end are just about the most sarcastic damn product placement I've ever seen.

Seagal I never got into.  I mainly liked the 80s/90s action stuff more towards the end when it started eating itself - Cobra, Commando, the previously mentioned Double Team.  All damn funny movies.

my buddy picked up a JCVD DVD 3 pack at walmart for 7 bucks. Cyborg, Double Impact, and Death Warrant. Fuck yes. There was a late night showing of Cyborg at the GMG residence over the weekend. Good times had by all.

Yeah man, Cyborg was a flick I enjoyed as well. It's got a cool, gritty low budget little sci-fi/action thing going on there. It makes for a fun double bill with the original Universal Soldier.

Definitely......  so many funny things going on here too. If you like Slow-mo...... you'll love this. Pretty much half the movie is in slow motion.....

Universal Soldier is all kinds of awesome. Might be the best "End fight" in the history of VDs career. Every fucking movie, man......  every movie, has one big staged fight sequence. Each one more dramatic than it's predecessor. Caught the end of Death Warrant yesterday (passed out for most of the duration) and you got some character named "Sandman" getting Lu-Kang kicked into a huge furnace, and come back out to finish the fight (after dropping and rolling first, of course).

JCVD is also the villain in the upcoming cheesefest The Expendables 2.  You might want to check that one out.

Not necessarily an action flick, but I didnt want to start another thread...... but anyone a fan of Boogie Nights? I caught this start to finish for the first time in years recently and oh my fuck......  what a beautiful, beautiful film. Fucking incredible, matter of fact. Beyond the awesome subject matter throughout, regarding the story....  just endless beautifully crafted LONG shots (nothing better than brilliant actors with looooooong, steady shots). Walhberg, John C Reily, Phillip S Hoffman, Reynolds, Cheadle.... just endless GREAT performances.... and a kick ass soundtrack as well.

GMG, the entire point of The Expendables franchise is to be a throw back to the exact era of action films you're referring to..that's why Stallone populated both films with a "dream team" of 80's action movie  stars.   The original was a series of non stop scenes of steroid cases (plus Jason Statham and Jet Li)  beating the shit out of one another , shooting the shit out of one another and otherwise blowing shit up. Good times.

As to Boogie Nights..that's a good flick, man. I thought it was cool how the director had everything moving along so the principle characters  were initially riding high..then, after one ill-fated New Year's party, everything just starts going downhill in all of their lives, with no one ending up really triumphant (except for maybe Don Cheadle's character, whose ultimate solution to his cash flow problem was both ironic and darkly comic ).

Exactly..... I don't like shit blowing up. I don't like gun blazing either. MY action.......MY action, is the martial arts action of all the flicks we've discussed above. I'll take a couple of round houses to the face by VD over a 10 minute heart stopping, steroid enduced action sequence all day.

right on, man......  the first pool scene at Reynolds house was incredible film making. The exchanges between Walhberg and Reily when talking about lifting weights and all that. It really showed how young and naive those two were.....and how Reynolds character really exploited them for his own profit. Burt never came off at that point in the film, as being like that....  but after the film is said in done, that's exactly what the case was.

Antother great scene worth mentioning is the attempted robbery sequence at the random Coc-heads house. You could feel the tension and nervousness coming off all 3 of them on the couch as this lunatic smokes crack while his son constantly lights off fire crackers in the house.....   phenomenal stuff.

"Oh my god man....this is the 2nd girl to OD on me this week, man"
"Gee, you think you might want to start getting different shit?"
