The Road is the best novel I have ever read. The emotional wallop it packs is well worth the time you invest in reading it, as is the poetic language he incorporates. Cormac McCarthy is a genius without peer in contemperary literature.

Recommended reads:
"The Passage" by Justin Cronin (vamps)
"The Reapers are the Angels" by Alden Bell (zombies)
"Heart-Shaped Box" by Joe Hill (ghost)

I really want to read The Road.

I think no list of apocalyptic novels would be complete without Frank Herbert's White Plague.  That novel creeped the shite out of me. And where is The Stand?

Also, I'd think Stephen King's Gunslinger series would count.  The books were very hit and miss, but the first book at least was pretty fabulous.  Not sure it would make a top 10 list for me, but it would be up there.

Cannot recommend Swan Song enough.

I refuse to read The Road because I just know it will leave me depressed.

I won't read it because of the kid thing.  Sigh.  Having a kid just sucks the fun out of some stuff, like reading about kids nearly getting eaten by post-apocalyptic cannibals.  I still half regret ever seeing Nobody Knows, because it was a completely brilliant movie but should have been rated NP-C, for "no parents admitted without a counselor."

Religion is like crack. Give it to the kids early enough and they're hooked. And that shit will fuck you up for life.
