Just had a Neil Marshall double-header with Dog Soldiers and The Descent. I love both of those flicks! Has anyone seen The Decent 2? Any good? I've been slacking on my horror watching lately. I'm working on fixing that this summer.

Hey PK! I actually just watched The Descent 2 a few weeks ago.  I didn't really want to watch it because I figured it was some cheap knock off, and I hadn't heard much about it.  While it wasn't great, I was pleasantly surprised.  It's not directed by Marshall, so there's the bad news.  However, it is a direct sequel, taking place pretty soon after the end of the first one.  The main girl is in it (Sarah? Too lazy to look it up) so you'll have to go by the US theatrical ending.  I wonder how Brits feel when they see a movie where the girl is all but dead at the end, then a sequel comes out like that never happened.

Anyway, it's definitely missing something that the first one had, but in general it exceeded my expectations.  I say it's definitely worth a rental, not so much a buy.

I'll be sure to add it to my Netflix cue. Thanks!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Descent 2. It certainly had it's faults. #1) it's a sequel to the American version, which had the inferior wtf ending. #2) The setup seems rushed. In the original film, it seemed like the characters were underground forever before the creatures showed up. In the sequel, it feels like they're under the earth's surface for all of 5 minutes before they start getting ripped to bits. #3) I didn't like the look of the creatures this time around. They were bigger & less feral-looking. Kinda lost the more inhuman aspect they had in the first film. #4) My BIGGEST problem: The ending. The ending of this one was a bigger needless wtf moment than the ending of the American theatrical version. But despite all the complaints, this was a good film & I highly recommend it. I empathized with some of the characters more than I did in the original. A lot more actually, which surprised me.

THANK YOU.  I watched it with a buddy who had also seen The Descent.  When we first saw the creatures I said I thought something wasn't right.  He swore up and down that they looked exactly the same as they did in the first film.  While they looked very similar, I knew something was different.  I think the first one you see also had a difference in the eyes, but then throughout they seemed to look a little closer to how they did in the original.

I just remembered another problem I had with the second one.  It was too bright.  Obviously, it wasn't super bright because they were underground, but there were several times where I was thinking to myself "Where is that light coming from? I shouldn't be able to see everything this well."  I complain sometimes because movies are too dark.  I went to see Priest at the drive-in and had no idea what was happening on screen for a third of the movie.  But if your movie takes place in an underground cave, I should struggle a little to make things out, because that's how the characters are feeling too.  I realize that this is a very hard thing to perfect in movies.  All the time in horror you'll see things lit up that shouldn't be.  There's not a lot they can do, but it just distracts me.  One of my biggest problems with Haute Tension was not the ending, but that Marie was tailing the truck in a car with all the interior lights on.  Nobody drives like that, let alone people trying to be inconspicuous.

Anyway, rant over.  LJ, let me know what you think of Stake Land.  I've been thinking about getting it on demand, but I want to make sure it's worth shelling out the $$ for.

I picked up I, Robot and The Invention of Lying over the weekend as part of a $4.75 sale Target is having on certain DVD's. I, Robot I've always enjoyed and have been meaning to pick up for a while now (even though it differed from Asimov's work) but The Invention of Lying was one that I missed back in '09 and had wanted to see.

I'll tell you, while I obviously do not agree with writer/co-director Ricky Gervais on the topic of God (he's an Atheist and the film subsequently adopts his perspective-though to be honest, I thought the film inadvertently suggested as strong an argument for faith as it did criticize the notion) ), The Invention of Lying was ingenius. It was also one of the funniest movies I've seen in a number of years..very, very dry humor but super sharp. It's also surprisingly thought provoking..its set in a sort of alternate universe where mankind has evolved along the same lines as in our universe....except that no one in that history of humankind has ever learned to lie. Everyone tells the truth whenever (and wherever)they speak. Gervais is the man who tells the first lie and discovers the power inherent in being the only human with the abilty to "say something that wasn't." I'd recommend it for anyone who's looking for something offbeat and original that will make you laugh and think

My buddy convinced me to order Hobo with a Shotgun On-Demand late night Saturday. Needless to say it was a mistake. I woke up on my couch at 6:45 in the morning. I don't remember one god damn scene from the movie. And I didnt get a chance to watch it yesterday so yeah.....  6 bucks on the comcast bill for nothing. Oh well.

Ordered Hall Pass as well. Great comedy.....  if you like their other films like Dumb and Dumber and Outside Providence, you'll dig this one too....   guaranteed.

Just bought wolfman remake at walmart.. and wow I gotta say I would love to see danny elfman randomly on the streets and punch him as hard as I can in the face and say "Thats for wolfman bitch!" I mean anthony hopkins and deltoro were fuckin phenominal and took it seriously...(which I cant believe anyone would do after reading the wolfman showdown scene) But yeah I'm seriously thinking of uploading that film on my computer and redoing the entire soundtrack with the original wolfman music, and deleteing the entire wwe smackdown.... like seriously I got so stoned, and actually enjoyed it (aside from that half assed attempt at a horror soundtrack) untill the very end... But yeah aside from a few plot flaws that could have been a great movie... and it really cheeses me off knowing that they must have had some sort of circle jerk in the production prossess... Seriously lame.

Also bought requiem for a dream(...ass to ass) district 9, and the mummy remake(yes the one with brendan frasier, I cant believe at one point in time that was my favorite movie) and my best purchase season 3 of breaking bad... if there is anyone out there who does not watch this show I highley reccomend it. best. tv. series. ever. (although the last few eps of the season they kinda threw together to make a drama leap for season 4)

I haven't gotten it yet, but can I just say that I NEED to get a copy of Flash Gordon?  Really badly.  I have been jonesing for a bit of Queen accompanied cheese for like 2 weeks.

"Titus, I'm booored. What plaything can you offer me today?" "An obscure body in the SK system, your majesty. The inhabitants refer to it as the planet ... Uuurth."

Dino D's production of Flash Gordon was indeed epic in it's awesome b-movie goodness. We had the OMPS on vinyl in a young Splatterscribe's household  back when the film hit..even the design of the record was garish, with the sleek futuristic logo from the film poster splashed across a bright yellow jacket. Fun stuff.

Favorite quotes by far:
Titus (watching a newsreel of Hitler) : "Ahh,now he showed promise."

Dale Arden: "Flash..Flash..I love you! But we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth!"

C'mon now.How can  anyone not  love that movie?

saw "Gang Tapes" yesterday afternoon. Came out in 2002. It's pretty much Menace 2 Society meets The Blair Witch Project. Violent, gritty, funny (not intentionally, mind you)   overall it was pretty good, man....  Didnt expect anything.

If you're like my buddy and I......who enjoy getting blazed and watching/making fun of blacks....  this one is definitely for you.

Joking. Really.

After a long journey that took many moons to complete, I finally watched Stake Land. It's kinda like Zombieland (without any of the humor) meets The Road, but it does have a good bit of originality thrown into the mix. The movie is very good, but be warned: it's BLEAK! You will not have a good time with your buddies drinking beers & watching Stake Land. The vamps were quite beastly, resembling feral animalistic zombies more than your "typical" vampire. One strike against it is that the protagonist/narrator IMO was the least interesting character in the movie. I wanted everybody else to live, but could've cared less what happened to him. It's still worth renting though.

Ordered "Blood Night: The Legend of Molly Hatchet" the other night. Had Danielle Harris and Bill Mosely. I gotta tell you....I was quite entertained for the majority of the duration. Story was kinda piss poor overall and the acting was pretty bad.....but I was pissing myself laughing at a few lines from the characters. Pretty friggin gory.....  I suggest giving it a shot.

Went to a horror convo and snagged myself some VHS-to-DVD converts of Popcorn, The Maxx: The Complete Series, Mr. Boogedy & The Bride of Boogedy. Ohhh the nostalgia...

I went to a used dvd/cd store this weekend and picked up A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 for $2, which means I now own the entire series except for part 2.  I also got Danny Boyle's Sunshine, which I have yet to watch, the Jessica Biel Texas Chainsaw Massacre deluxe edition, and Scary Movie 2.  I paid 10 bucks total.  I always go to this place at the earliest an hour before they close, because if I don't I will be there ALL DAY.  It's like an addiction, I can't leave that place until I've gone through every single movie or they're closing.  Sometimes they'll have the most random stuff that I have to buy because it's so cheap.  A couple months ago I picked up The Exorcist III for $1.
